It is now too late in the newt breeding cycle for a full newt survey but you can still prove absence of Great Crested newt through an EDNA test. These can be carried out until the end of June and involve sampling the pond and sending the samples to be tested in a lab. If your projecct is critical and you cant wait until next year for a full survey this may help you out. If however it comes back positive, proving that GCN are present, then a full survey to work out a population size class may still need to be done next year.
